Text Box: Aromas of citrus, summer hay and wildflowers precede juicy summer flavors of ripe peach and kiwi in this crisp, refreshing viognier. Excellent with seafood salads, island sushi, and summer trade winds. Viognier grapes from the ancient sedimentary slopes of the Templeton Gap-El Pomar microclimates were whole cluster pressed, barrel fermented, and aged sur lies for six months in neutral French oak. Hansen Vineyard lies in the El Pomar district of Paso Robles, at the end of the Templeton Gap wind tunnel. It features soils with distinctive streaks of black which soil scientists Dr. Tom Rice speculates are carbon-rich lake or river beds which have been uplifted to the surface, giving the El Pomar vineyards a unique mineral identity. Chequera is Spanish for “checkbook,” and this vineyard on Highway 46 West in Templeton Gap was featured in wine writer Natalie MacLean’s book Red, White and Drunk All Over. MacLean describes a visit to the vineyard with Randall Grahm's (Bonny Doon) roving vineyard manager, Nicole Walsh. Walsh kneels and digs her fingers into the soil.  "Smell this," she says.  I squat down beside her and put my nose to the handful.  The rich dirt has a voluptuous savory-sweet aroma.  I have a strange craving to eat it.  I can almost feel the ground beneath me seething with microorganisms groping in the dark.  Winemaker Dan Panico has been working with viognier since there were only 12 wineries in California producing it. This vintage features his signature rich, creamy style with brightly balanced acidity. Only 6 barrels produced.
